Whoopsie Daisies is Vintage Personalized Tooth Fairy Pillows.  

 Wasn't hard to figure that one out, huh?  I'm very excited to have a main focus as well as a streamlined production system.  With all of the changes taking place in my household, I think this new direction will be one I'm very happy with.

Pretty Vintage Pillowcase Turns Cafe Apron - A Free Tutorial - Super Easy!

Since this is one of my most popular blog posts ever, I am re-posting it!  It was originally posted back in June of 2008.  

Some of you have asked about easy instructions for a beginner apron. So, here you go!

This one is made from two vintage pillowcases. They are so much fun to use because of the unique embroidery work you find on each one.

Materials Needed:
1 Vintage Pillowcase
2 6"x19" pieces of fabric for pockets
2 2 1/2"x about 40" pieces of fabric for ties (can use upper portion of pillowcase)Vintage Trim - Rick Rack or Ribbon
White Thread
Sewing Machine and/or Serger
Straight Pins
Iron
Rotary Cutter and Mat
Transparent Ruler
Scissors

Instructions:
1. Press your pillowcase using your iron and spray starch.
2. Determine the length for your apron. (Mine is 21") Add 2 1/2" for the waistband. Using a rotary cutter       and transparent ruler, cut across your pillowcase.
3. Determine the width of your apron. (Mine is about 33" wide) Flip your pillowcase over, and cut a slit down the middle. Lay it out flat on your cutting mat and cut to the desired width being careful to center the motif.
4. Hem the sides by serging; zig zagging; or turning under 1/4", press, turning under another 1/4", press, then stitch in place close to the folded edge.
5. At the top of your apron, turn down 2 1/2" towards the back for the waistband and press.


6. Open back out and turn under 1/4" along the raw edge. Press back down.
7. Using rotary cutter and ruler, cut 2 strips of fabric for the apron ties 2"x about 40" (twice the width of your pillowcase works great!).
8. Press under 1/4" on the 2 long sides and 1 short side of each apron tie. Press under another 1/4" on the 2 long sides.

9. To avoid bulky tips on the apron ties, fold the material back out and trim the corners. Fold the short end to make a pointed tip and press. Stitch around the apron ties close to the folded edge.

10. Insert ties into the sides of waistband. Pin in place. Stitch all the way around close to the folded edge.

The basics are done - now it's time to embellish!

11. Cut 2 pieces of fabric 6"x19" for pockets. Fold with right sides together and press. Stitch around with 1/4" seam allowance - Be sure to leave about 2" opening (to turn right side out).

12. Trim the corners and turn right side out. Press well. Stitch opening closed.

13. Pin pockets in place. Stitch around 3 sides close to edge.
14. To create smaller pocket sections, stitch down the center of each pocket.
15. Add desired trim along the bottom using a straight stitch.

Congratulations! You're done!

Pillowcase Pants

I needed a birthday gift this past weekend for a little 2 year old girl - and wondered why the heck I was headed to Wally World to buy another plastic toy? So, dug around my fabric stash and found a cute little pillowcase - whipped up a pair of pajama pants for her. She should be able to wear these for a long time since it's got elastic and drawstring waist - and little girls can wear them as capris as they get older. Kind of liking the motif on just one leg - I'm thinking there's lots of room for creativity here.

Garage sale - SCORE!

After hours, upon hours, upon hours of sewing into the wee hours, My family suffering through a dirty house, unwashed clothing, dinners from the freezer at best, and not much sleep (sick child too)....

I think the gods are with me.

5 tablecloths and 1 huge pillowcase!

What shall these pretty tablecloths become??? I'm headed to the fabric store this morning, much to my son's dismay (he's been known to cry as we enter the parking lot), to purchase more interfacing and more batting. Still making coffee cozies and tooth fairy pillows. Need to make more burp cloths, diaper wipes pouches, aprons, pj pants, the list goes on and on. Other ideas floating around in my head, just not enough time to create them.

Is there ever enough time? I don't think so. Not for me anyway. I've got too many things I want to do. Life is short. Think I'll try and have some fun. Not in the mood to follow the rules today.

Great Show - a little drippy, but a great show!

We ended up having a great show - a little, well, a LOT wet, but still we had a good turnout and lots of fun!

We had necklaces, earrings, matchboxes, artwork, pumpkins, aprons, crocheted hats,.....

pajama pants, coffee cozies, burp cloths, diaper wipes pouches,........

good things to eat, good friends, a sweet doggie who acted as our welcoming committee....

and a lot of fun!

My new "Junk"

Here are pictures of my piles of new "junk" that I found in Indiana a few weeks ago.....lots of embroidered goodies, lace goodies, crocheted trim, etc..... These are pillowcases...not sure what I'll do with them yet - but excited to have some new patterns to work with.
Then, these are the sheets - probably destined to become pajama pants.....the green sheet on the right has super soft and has this perfect 5 inch or so edging - it'll be perfect for the bottom hem of the pants.
This is a bark cloth drap I found....I love working with bark cloth - it's really sturdy for bags and pouches.
Slowly getting myself back into the swing of things and getting caught up with mail, bills, returning phone calls, etc. all the stuff you have to do after being gone. Three weeks worth of good down time, fun time, not much house cleaning, cooking, laundry time!
My hubby has been gone too - headed up north fishing - I "tried" to get the lawn mowed this morning, but after being bitten by fire ants, practically dying of heat stroke, and having the mower die on me (there's a little trick to get it going again, but I'm not privvy to that knowledge, guess it gives the man of the household something to hold onto since he's not mowing the grass these days), I caved and have a very nice boy mowing for me at the moment.

More Cake

Yesterday I managed to whip out this Layer Cake apron while my son played (or, well some may say, destroyed, but I'm not picky).  

I'm loving this one - there are so many details - hand crocheted edges, hand embroidery, vintage rick rack, crocheted leaves, and zig zag stitching.

The colors are bright and beautiful - this one is one of a kind for sure!

Canton Vintage Goodies

I found a really great stash of linens yesterday in Canton - First Monday!  So excited to have new colors and patterns to work with.  

I also found these two adorable aqua blue green Samonsite suitcases.  I'm planning to air them out and clean them up as best as possible and store my fabric, and notions in them instead of the ugly plastic bins I'm using right now.  I had several people ask me as I lugged them around the flea markets yesterday what I planned to do with them - I guess they were expecting some great new idea, except I just told them I was going to store things in them.  One guy I just told that I was headed to the train station to catch the next train out of town.   Those suckers are heavy!  I can't imagine dragging them through DFW airport full of clothes and shoes.  Of course, now they'd break the weight limit with just cotton balls in them.  I'd end up spending an extra $100 just to use my too cute suitcases.  They'll stay in my dining room/sewing room for now.

Those are 3 cute, cute little aprons I snatched up, laying across the top.  Loving the polka dots and the aqua/brown combination.
These are some tea towels that I picked up.  I'm fairly new to tea towels and wanted a few in my arsenal to work with.  I almost feel bad knowing that their fate will be a pair of sharp Ginghers. 
Here are a couple of tableclothes and the cutest Scotty dog table runner.  The pink tableclothe has polka dots, which are too sweet.
Here's all of it....fun stuff for sure.  They are all headed to the washing machine for several days of soaking.  That sounds kind of nice actually, soaking, not in the washing machine, but maybe in the tub!  My girl friend Sally has been kicking my hiney lately 3 mornings a week.  We're trying to get bathing suit ready....not fair in Texas, that season comes early.  I'd like to not embarrass myself too much this summer, or scare away my friends and their children.  Too good of friends out there to risk losing them to my winter flab.

Also - Check out Vintage Indie - Modern Life, Vintage Perspective.  They featured my newest Layer Cake Apron yesterday.  This is also a fav blog of mine - I love how the editor - Gabrieal Wyatt states that their goal is to give new life to once disregarded items and blend them into the modern world we live in today.  For those of us that love vintage - isn't that what it's all about?  Honoring the past by bringing it into our lives today.  Love it.  Check it out!

Sweet Spring Skirts with a Vintage Touch

I'm thinking spring - and starting to think about what my children will be wearing for Easter. The goal is a dress made from a vintage sheet (of course) paired with new material from Joann's. Then little boy will wear Jon Jon's (or shorts - don't know yet) made from the same new material from Joann's. The problem is finding the time to get it all done - which is why I caved and bought them new outfits from Orient Expressed last year. I loved the outfits, just not the crazy price!
